1. People motivated by Achievement. This kind of people are attracted to challenging and difficult projects. If you have an employee who is motivated by achievement, they are most likely good at handling pioneer projects or launching product or service during the dry run stage. Just remember to keep recognizing their efforts every time they are doing a good job. It is also necessary to set a standard or proper instruction because tracking their own progress is very important for them. They are also good at problem solving. A deep sense of achievement is the biggest reward for them. However, they don’t work best in routines. It is advisable to keep them in departments like marketing, analysis, financial statements interpretation and planning.
2. People motivated by Affiliation. This kind of people are motivated by affiliation thus, they work best in a group environment. They are also the best team player. It’s good to let them work in a team especially in routine. They are the best people in production or operation. They are normally cheerful people and pleasant to be with. The best reward for them are team buildings or any event and occasion that let them interact with their group. They have very good interpersonal relationship and cooperative by nature. They usually go with majority decision and very easy to agree. The only thing is unlike the achievement motivated people, they are easily stunned by unexpected challenges. They don’t usually like the idea of thinking out of the box. However, they keep the balance in the work place.
3. People motivated by Power. People motivated by power are usually people who have a high need for power. They are natural born leader. They work best when they are in charge. The best reward for them is giving them new projects, making them in charge of bigger departments or just entrusting them more responsibilities. They also have the best negotiation skills. They are usually highly intelligent people and think ahead of their time. They also have this undeniable charm and are known to be very good influencer. They are the best managers, supervisors, and the like. However, being perfectionist is both their good and bad characteristic. They easily get discouraged when things are not going as they expect it to be. Just make sure that they are not over worked because they could burn out too.
So those are the three kinds of motivation need according to McClelland and understanding them and being able to apply them to your manpower is the secret to an efficient human resources management. -M.D.
